Dia de los Muertos

November 3, 2008

On the day that many U.S. kids think of little more than costumes and candy, ARTech held a Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebration, and students celebrated in traditional ways in addition to learning about Mexican customs associated with honoring the dead, , including a decorated altar, candy calaveritos, pinata, homemade tortillas, and salsa.

Most of the supplies for the festival were purchased from Las Menas, a small, local Latino mercado. ARTech has a growing Latino population, and the student body and Spanish department are capitalizing on the knowledge and backgrounds of

these students to try to create authentic learning opportunities for the school community.

Keep posted for celebrations of this sort in the future!
